Neurontin and Lyrica are a Death Sentence for New Brain Synapses: Shocking Study

A shocking study shows that these two drugs block the formation of new brain synapses1, drastically reducing the potential for rejuvenating brain plasticity – meaning that these drugs will cause brain decline that apparently robs one of the ability to rebuild. The study demonstrating this type of brain damage with these two drugs came out in 2009 but apparently, the media has been very lax in getting any of this information to the public – most likely because they do not want to jeopardize their advertising income from this company.

But the patients are not the only ones not getting this information because the doctors are apparently clueless as well. I say that because first our Facebook group for these two drugs “Neurontin (Gabapentin) & Lyrica (Pregabalin) Should Be Illegal” is growing so quickly. Then this past Spring my brother working on some things in the backyard pulled a muscle in his back. I was shocked to learn that he had gone to the doctor for that and the doctor gave him a prescription for Neurontin!

I shared with him the information in this study indicating the brain damage from the drug at which point he understandably decided not to take the drug.
Although I have included the full article on this below this is the link to the article which you need to follow to find the full research study if you want to take it to your doctor to educate him:

Now my question is why on earth has the FDA not pulled these drugs from the market in light of this study? I ask that because before this study the worst I had seen in producing brain damage were the diet pills Fen-Phen and Redux which were pulled from the market due to the brain damage they produced … even though the media convinced the world those drugs were pulled because of the heart and lung damage. It was the brain damage the FDA was concerned about and had required studies from the maker to prove its safety. Something they had not yet done before Dr. Una Mc Cann at NIH put out a study showing the most horrific brain damage. Those drugs were pulled only days later.

Neurontin and Lyrica are a Death Sentence for New Brain Synapses

Neurontin and its newer more potent version, Lyrica, are widely used for off-label indications that are an outright flagrant danger to the public. These blockbuster drugs were approved for use even though the FDA had no idea what they actually did in the brain. A shocking new study shows that they block the formation of new brain synapses1, drastically reducing the potential for rejuvenating brain plasticity – meaning that these drugs will cause brain decline faster than any substance known to mankind.

The problem of these drugs is compounded by their flagrant illegal marketing. Neurontin was approved by the FDA for epilepsy back in 1994. The drug underwent massive illegal off-label promotion that cost Warner-Lambert 430 million dollars (the very first big fine for off-label promotion). The drug is now owned by Pfizer. Pfizer also owns Lyrica, a super-potent version of Neurontin. It has been approved by the FDA for various types of pain and fibromyalgia. Lyrica is one of four drugs which a subsidiary of Pfizer illegally marketed, resulting in a $2.3 billion settlement against Pfizer.

Even though the marketing of these drugs has been heavily fined, they continue to rack up billions in sales from the off-label uses. Doctors use them for all manner of nerve issues because they are good at suppressing symptoms. However, such uses can no longer be justified because the actual mechanism of the drugs is finally understood and they are creating a significant long-term reduction in nerve health.

The researchers in the above study try to downplay the serious nature of the drugs by saying “adult neurons don’t form many new synapses.” That is simply not true. The new science is showing that brain health during aging relies on the formation of new synapses. Even these researchers managed to question the common use of these medications in pregnant women. How is a fetus supposed to make new nerve cells when the mother is taking a drug that blocks them?

These are the kind of situations the FDA should be all over. As usual, the FDA is sitting around pondering a suicide warning for Lyrica while its off-label uses include bi-polar disorder and migraine headaches. The FDA is likely to twiddle its thumbs for the next decade on the brain damage issue. Consumer beware.

Soon there will be no medications that are safe to consume. Now that the opioid crisis has disrupted chronic pain patients Drs are prescribing other meds in place of them. Fix one problem and create another.

Are there also concerns about gabapentin supplements and PharmaGABA?

  5. Marisa says:

Are there 9th er medications that work as well as lyrica without the harmful brain effects?

  6. This is why I consistently complain that the FDA does more harm than good and should be abolished.

  7. Diane L. Carr says:

This is horrible, I have been taking Neurontin for many years and I’m wondering what damage has it caused in my brain?
I have MS and back in the mid 80s Neurontin was the drug of choice by Dr.s for slowing the progression of MS exsabarations. Now I understand why. We must stop the use of these fatal drugs.

  8. Leda Jones says:

I knew something was wrong. First I took gabapentin, didn’t help with pain and I gained 30lbs!
Now Lyrica, I heard myself say to a friend, “it doesn’t block my pain, just fucks me up so I don’t care I’m hurting. I take 150mgs 3xd.
They took me off hydrocodone after ten years because the government wants everyone off. I wished the government would go ahead a do whatever they want to do under our noses and leave us alone. We can’t stop whatever it is they are going to do anyway! Quit peeing on my leg and tell me its raining!

  9. Tracee says:

WOW! I’m so glad I chose this GMP-Certified Hemp CBD for my fibromyalgia! I’ve only had 2 short minor flares in over a year, it’s changed my life.

  11. Angie M. Wilkinson says:

Unfortunately I’ve taken this drug for many years and this article is a blessing because I told a friend a few years back, before my surgery, that I felt like my mind wasn’t functioning properly. Very sad that greed controls everything.

I would like to take the research to my Doctor. Would you make it so we can either click on the research link, or copy and paste? Thanks!

  13. Kathi says:

I have had MUCH more success at controlling my flare ups with a high protein diet and taking 5000 units of vitamin D every day. Make sure you take one that is a complex with the additional minerals in it or a good multivitamin. Doctors have done more to make fibro worse than they have to fix it. It’s taken me almost 8 years to wean off all the meds they had me on.

  14. Jen says:

How do you find out more information on this? My wife has taken both and has visible brain abnormalities!

  15. shelly d russell says:

My doctor prescribed the generic form of Neurotin, for diabetic neuropathy, while taking the medications my mind became foggy, I couldn’t remember things. I would repeat questions over and over to my children, I knew something was wrong, I stopped taking the medication….it was to the point that my daughter thought I had early onset dementia…several times since my doctor has attempted to get me to take it again, I refuse everytime, I explained what it did to me, I cannot even remember the lyric’s to a song anymore, songs I have sang for years.

  16. Joni says:

Great information but for those of us with disabilities it would be nice that if your going to put a link to source to follow or share with our doctors that you be able to click on that link and have it work or at the least be able to copy and paste the link to access it.

  19. Sharon Blair says:

I was prescribed Neurontin for menapause about 5 years ago and yes it works but I have also gained 60lbs and nothing i seem to do helps take it off and sense taking Neurontin my memory has went down drastically. I can not remember hardly anything with out writing everything down. I was in college and had to drop out because of the course I was almost completed with was alot of memorizing.. OMG wht else are they gonna come up with.

  20. Cassandra Ingli says:

I’ve been on Gabapentin since 2014 after crushing my foot, (blew up the calcaneus), after sliding into a hidden tree stump in snow at high impact while sledding I have been off & on Lyrica up to present day… with attempts for pain control. In 2018 to present, I was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis, incorrectly, and eventually Pudendal Neuralgia, with possible nerve entrapment. My Gabapentin dose was tripled for pain. My head CT findings from 2018 were normal. My January 2019 CT imaging show “mild chronic cerebral and cerebellum volume loss.” I am 41 years old with no hx of stroke or TBI/ABI. I HAVE JUST CAME ACROSS THIS ARTICLE AND I’M LITERALLY FEELING FAINT. I have a 7 year old and 10 year old and pain has destroyed my life recently. I had not realized these, thought to be, “benign” pharmaceuticals have been slowly destroying my cognition as well. At least I have an explanation for the change in brain presentations. ???

  21. Jody says:

I was wondering who did the study?

  22. Elmer says:

I am so glad I am off gabapentin after 20 years, and my husband is off Lyrica!! Hopefully we will live longer… find natural alternatives that is what we did …

  23. Arline Constance says:

I was given Sevella. It is a drug in the same class. I blacked out when I took it. Does it have the same reaction on the brain? I did not take it long. I think a couple of months.

  25. Bryan Hatmaker says:

Omg !!! I’ve been taking Lyrica for over 7 years now and I’ve noticed that I feel like I’m not functioning properly and I had an accident in 09’ causing me to be paralyzed from the nipple line down !! In this area I can’t feel any thing except for the terrible agonizing pain caused by the neuropathy that I have from the waist down and the drug does stop this but i too can tell something just isn’t right in my mind and it’s probably caused by this medication instead of the brain damage caused by the accident !! I can’t bare the pain from the neuropathy and this drug does stop it and it’s the only one the Drs. have ever found that will stop the neuropathy pain it’s excruciating ? to deal with especially in my legs so what am I supposed to do now either or will definitely be fatal to me !!! I really need some answers fast before it’s everlasting to late ?? !! How can I legally try these GMP-Certified Hemp CBD products for my fibromyalgia without it interfering with my drug screening tests I have to have to get the pain and nerve medication I really have to have to survive ? Pain and nerve issues are invisible to the human eye ? and devastating to the brain and body !! It’s sad that these drug companies will legally give things of this nature to people such as myself that are killing us faster than the problems we are addressing which can probably be solved naturally through the CBD and THC methods with very little if any side effects but just because of the greed of the almighty dollar itself which the owners and investors of these huge multi-trillion dollar industries think and won’t live without knowing how much damage and destruction it’s causing to we the consumer just trying to have a little better quality of life so we to can properly function in today’s complex society !!! Help me please ASAP so I to can get the proper help that I need and maybe I can help out others in need of the same scenario, Thanks Bryan Hatmaker !!!! ??‍♂️✌?

  26. Linda says:

I agree, the government and Insurance companies. They are taking away what helps those of us who has chronic issues and pain. Some doctors doesn’t believe in Fibromyalgia. I think some of the medications makes other symptoms worse.

  27. Michelle says:

I was on gabapentin for a few months in 2009 for damaged nerves from my back, I went off them because I was dealing with memory loss. Had to go back on them in 2018 because of the nerve pain in my legs and at times couldn’t walk, the med helped me, but after 2 weeks started dealing with memory loss and gets worse the longer I’m on it. I was on 3 150mg a day, I am down to one and trying to get off the drug before it destroys my brain more.

  28. TERESA says:

I’ve been taking gabapinton for years now. My thought process isn’t the same. Can’t think clearly. My husband has noticed a huge change. Now I’m concerned. How will I control my horrible pain and not hurt myself with this drug. Scared of taking anything anymore.

  29. DevilsAdvocate says:

I also would like ability to cut and paste. OR — print option – the kind that reformats into blocked style and eliminates all the ads, and superfluous stuff. Absolutely I need to share this w/my docs! Whoever commented about docs terminating pain pills but then being more than willing to prescribe these POISONS is right on. Many of the ‘replacement rx’s have been described as much more addictive, and doing much more damage, than the pain pills they’re taking away.

  30. Irene Webber says:

I don’t like it when articles don’t clearly list and make available their sources so I did it myself.

  31. Jay says:

Well, Gabapentin has saved me. I could not walk without it! So, I recon if I had to choose between the pain and not being able to walk/work or possibly not having new sinapse formed, I’ll have to choose the latter. MASSIVE nerve damage in feet and ankles!!

    • Heather Stufflebean says:

You might regret that when lists don’t even work but because you can’t remember the item by the time you pick up your phone or if the item actually does make it to a list you don’t ever remember you even have a list to look at it. You can’t explain your problems to your doctor because you can’t remember enough to answer their follow-up questions. You can’t make decisions, can’t prioritize, can’t focus on absolutely anything to the point that you feel like you’re constantly walking in a fog, somebody can walk right up next to you while you’re getting a drink of water and you have no idea who it is because all your focus is on getting the drink of water, you’re literally terrified of speaking to people because you make things worse for yourself every time so you live in almost complete isolation, you can’t handle almost any kind of paperwork, can’t handle the mail, can’t handle paying bills, lost everyone in your life, do I need to go on?? Sorry I would have chosen my brain had anybody let me know. Btw I used to be exceptionally intelligent and had an amazing photographic memory.

  32. Tara Hopkins says:

Literally the only 2 meds I get relief from but its killing my memory

  33. Lesia Duncan says:

I take gabapentin for nerve pain and fibromyalgia. It does make me forgetful, and I’ll fill loopy.

  34. I see ONE ARTICLE with several names listed but no company or organization that they represent. Since when does one article ,with no detailed study parameters, methods or numbers, become the determining expert? I am suspect of the intent of this article and the urging of abandonment of gaba- drugs. I need a lot more convincing. There may be a reason doctors are not aware of this study – it is not recognized as a reliable determination for medical professionals. Don’t abandon your pain relieving meds without talking to your doctors. Trust those who know you and your responses, needs, beyond a random article.

  35. Sandy May says:

So this is why i can not remember nothing. Im 44 years old and my memory has gone to shit. Ill be talking to my doctors about this.

  36. Dale Chambers says:

I am suppose to take Lyrica 3 times a day and know how horrible this drug is so I have gradually weaned myself done to 1 a day. Now if Medicare would cover CBD oil, I think a lot of us would gladly give up meds period. I have sciatic neuropathy from my sciatic being overstretched during a hip replacement 🙁 If anyone has a different route I can go, please advice me.

  37. Cathy Fox says:

I have been taking 800mg of Neurontin 3 times daily & Lyrica 150mg twice a day plus Tramadol 100mg twice a day as needed for YEARS 10-15 years as far as I can remember!!!! I am starting to have probs remembering things frequently & sometimes in mid sentence I have to search for the right word!!!! I just thought this was a normal sign of aging. NOW I’M SCARED TO TAKE ANY OF THEM!!!!!

  38. April Dees says:

I’ve taken this drug for 8 years. 3400mgs a day. I’ve tried to stop taking them bc I’m on Suboxone but I get sick and hurt so bad. My Suboxone doesn’t touch that kind of withdrawal. What should I do? Please let me know.

  39. Ken says:

You can open this article on your internet browser and print this and much more if you wish.

  40. Sandy says:

I have been prescribed this for knee and hip pain due to opioid crisis. I must have about 300 600mg pills sitting in my pill drawer. I refuse to take them.
I don’t like the way they make me feel and I see no point as my problems are not nerves.
My Dr’s office is prescribing them left and right. To everyone for Everything.
    Stout med center in Denver.
I’m putting this out there because there is too many people taking it. And now buying it on the street. For 2 bucks a pill.
Soon as I find a pill drop off I’m sending them back .
I have always got a bad feeling about this pill.
I truly think it’s due to the opioid problem. But that’s not the answer. And now I heard people are selling these. Omg….
I hope my info will help anyone or someone. Or even get someone to look into it. ….this is not a pill to mess with.

  42. Amy says:

So I take lyrica for fibromyalgia and wonder why I can’t remember anything! I can’t take CBD or cannabis for relief because I’m a cop, so what’s the answer? You tell us the problem but no remedy.

  43. Liz says:

Any studies on Cymbalta (for fibromyalgia) which darn near killed me?

  44. Dorothy says:

I have taken lyrica for many. Many years…if I stop taking it, I cannot sleep, I feel like my skin is crawling, my eyes itch and are so bad, I would rather take the med instead …is lyrica habit forming? I also can lose 10 pounds really quickly. ..please answer my questions. ..thank you. ..

  45. Nonamé Foryü says:

Where’s the ACTUAL SCIENCE links? This article is just another person stoking the big pharmacies bad fire and following right in line with the opioid epidemic. I would be DEAD without Lyrica, because it has helped with the severe nerve pain associated w my stage IV breast cancer, I actually have a life.
People, do yourself a favor and research for yourselves the subject of this study that keeps being mentioned but not directly linked to.

  46. Carrie martinette says:

I was prescribed both these drugs years ago because drs were wanting to get patients including me off of my longterm pain meds.percocet is still the best for me. I take them correctly. So meanwhile while paranoids are taking percocets and vicodin away then killing us with other crap.

  47. Charlene Sharp says:

I took 2400 mg a day of gabapentin for over 3 years for my fibromyalgia and have dramatic brain changes. Its sad that this medication does this and that drs dont have a clue as to its long lasting damages to our bodies.

  48. Chad Cloward says:

I am a man who HAD severe Fibromyalgia. I was on these drugs but I was also 100% committed to getting off them. I have been off them since August 1st and still pain free and healthier than ever. Food, mediation, Qigong etc are the keys.

  49. Connie says:

Was put on Lyrica when I hand shingles. It made me feel “high” or out of it. I wrecked my mower into a tree. Thank God I was not driving a vehicle. I went right off and told my dr I never wanted that drug again! I have fibromyalgia and had for many years. My self management is what I choose because I do not trust these drugs that are killing us and causing addiction. Balance and limitations are everything. Know your body!

Both myself and my dog have been taking gabapentin for awhile now WOW who would guess

  51. Kristin says:

I think I found the link to the original study from 2009 which seems to focus on women who are pregnant. Also the study makes mention of gabapentin having greatly diminished danger to the mature adult brain. Read for yourself.

  52. Vicki Souza says:

I took gabapentin from Oct 2015 through April 2016 for Guillian Barre syndrome and it worked very well for the nerve pain but I gained about 45lbs and thought I’d never get rid of it. But gabapentin had affected my memory so bad, I can remember traumatic, extremely happy times when i was younger really well, but i can’t remember what I’m talking about while I’m talking anymore, for the last 3 years. Please let me know if there is any lawyers involved. Thank you and God bless….Vicki Souza⚘

  53. Jan says:

if I have been using gabapentin for 7 months and stop taking it will the brain start developing new synapses again and heal any damage that might have been lost. Is there anything natural that can increase the brain synapses that might have been affected those 7 months of use??

    • Heather Stufflebean says:

It destroyed my brain over the 8 years I was on it. I’ve been off of it for about 5 years and my brain has not recovered whatsoever. Maybe since you haven’t been on it as long

  54. Oronda G Taylor says:

I have been taking gabapentin for many years now. I have noticed a big difference in my brain functions. My husband has been taking gabapentin for several years now. In May, 2018, he was diagnosed with mini strokes, dementia, & Parkinson’s disease. I’ve been taking care of him 24/7. It’s draining me physically, mentally, & emotionally. My health has declined
so much in the last 5-7 years. I have the website address to get the needed information. Thank you so much for informing me/us of these two death sentencing drugs. I will talk to our doctor & we’ll go from there. Thanks again! I am sure you have saved our lives! God Bless You!
