Can fibromyalgia develop in teenagers?
A lot of medical conditions are there that are still a mystery and put doctors in the debate. One of these mysterious medical conditions is fibromyalgia. There are a lot of symptoms of fibromyalgia that are similar to the symptoms of other diseases. It was believed for a very long time that fibromyalgia is a form of depression (as it arises with this mental disorder). However, fibromyalgia is taken in to account now and researchers are finding more about this disease.
But there isn’t any research up till now who has shown the actual cause of fibromyalgia. So, there is no actual cure for it yet. But there are treatments for symptoms and also a lot of people have learned how to live their lives with this disorder.
What actually is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome in which a patient feels widespread pain all over the body. It has other symptoms as well. Most people with FMS are also diagnosed with other medical conditions like depression, MS etc.
A lot of other symptoms can be present in people with FMS. Some can experience those symptoms more and some can experience fewer symptoms. Different people have different symptoms present in their bodies. Following is the list of some common symptoms that have been encountered:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Sleeping issues (like insomnia, restless sleep or waking up as tired)
- Lack of energy
- Migraines
- Muscle pain/Muscle twitching
- The irritable bowel syndrome
- Irritable bladder (frequent urination)
- Fatigue (ranges from moderate to severe)
- Numbness and tingling in the legs, arms, hands
- Swelling feeling without actual swelling
- Jaw tenderness
- Facial tenderness
Sometimes, these symptoms are so severe in some patients with FMS, that their condition can get even worse.
The actual cause of fibromyalgia
This question seeks answers from patients as well as from researchers. Yes, this is true that there isn’t any actual cause of fibromyalgia found yet. Many theories, as well as many risk factors, are there. There is a thin line between what seems to be a cause and what seems to be a symptom, due to which it makes it impossible to develop any cure for it.
Many of the researchers have put light on the fact that there is a connection between fibromyalgia and the pain that body senses. The low levels of serotonin secreted by the brain cause higher intensity of pain than normal. However, it is still not described how this serotonin level drops.

Some people have put light on the fact that fibromyalgia is caused due to some injury brought to the brain or nervous system. Some researchers related fibromyalgia with depressions. Even, some have pointed out that this can be genetic. You might have a strong risk of developing this disease if there is someone in your family who is having this disease.
Moreover, it has also stated that if you have the poor physical condition, you might have chances to develop fibromyalgia in you. Because, if you don’t do exercise, your body cannot be resistant to pain.
Fibromyalgia in teenagers
Sadly, more than 5 million people are there in the US who are suffering from fibromyalgia. Among these people, this syndrome does not develop in teenagers and children. More women are found with this medical condition whose age falls above 18.
However, it is still believed that children are diagnosed with fibromyalgia between 1 to 7%. Fibromyalgia is hard to be diagnosed in adults and in case of children and teenagers, it can be even harder to diagnose because there are more subtle symptoms.
It seems to be one of the hardest things about fibromyalgia that all the symptoms are inter-connected or related somehow. If a teenager is unable to have a proper sleep, he will suffer from fatigue and a person who suffers from fatigue might feel more intense pain than other normal persons. Children who suffer from fibromyalgia mostly encounter issues like anxiety and depression, sleep disturbances, stomachaches, headaches, memory issues, and dizziness. One major thing that doctors usually do to diagnose this disease is that they press on the 18 tender points in the human body. If the pain is felt in some tender points, the doctor starts to proceed with the further examination of fibromyalgia. FM/a is considered to be one of the best tests to diagnose fibromyalgia.
In case of teenagers, the doctor will not prescribe the same medicine as for adults. Exercising, other remedies and pain medication can be given to a teen.
