Is there any connection between Carpel Tunnel Syndrome and Fibromyalgia?
The use of hands and wrists is so much common in today’s world. We use computers, we are on our mobiles, and many other things with our hands. Due to this, some disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome have got more common among the people.
Some connections do exist between fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel syndrome. You need to consider if you have issues with your wrists and hands while you are having fibromyalgia.
Carpel tunnel syndrome
Imagine if you are in your office and typing a report for your boss for a while. You are just going back and rechecking all your work to get it correct and accurate to be presented. And all of a sudden, you start feeling some pain in your hands, arms, and wrists.
The whole area starts to tingle and then a pain occurs. This all happens because of applying too much pressure for a long time on your nerves in the wrist, and due to this these nerves start to pinch and a pain occurs.
The main nerve named as the median nerve in this bodily area is affected more. This nerve drives from right below your elbow, crossing through your forearm into the wrist and ends in the hand. A lot of work has been done by this nerve and due to which there are chances of carpal tunnel syndrome to occur. The reason why this is called carpal tunnel syndrome is this the area in which median curve is located is called “carpal tunnel”.
Usually, there isn’t a specific type of person who can suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome, unlike many other diseases. Basically, there are chances for occurrence of it when you do a lot of work with your hands, arms and wrists. Certain risk factors are also there and more chances of carpal tunnel are to develop in diabetics, pregnant ladies and people with autoimmune diseases. But there isn’t that much difference, if you do the same thing many times with your wrists and hands, there are more chances of carpal tunnel syndrome to occur.

But a plus point of carpal tunnel syndrome is that it can be prevented in many ways. Now, a lot of keyboards have been made that can exert less pressure on your wrists, due to which you have a low risk of occurring this syndrome. Moreover, you can take breaks between works regularly. A lot of exercises are there too that can help you in stretching your wrists and help you in getting flexible. Due to these exercises, there are fewer chances of compressing the nerve and having carpal tunnel syndrome.
Relation of Carpel Tunnel syndrome with fibromyalgia
We haven’t mentioned this earlier that fibromyalgia is also a risk factor for carpal tunnel syndrome. There are more chances (4 to 6 times more) of having carpal tunnel in people with fibromyalgia. Some people say that fibromyalgia is considered to be one of the biggest risk factors for carpal tunnel. Women are more likely to have carpal tunnel in case of fibromyalgia, as compared to men, even though both of the genders get it.
The question arises, why fibromyalgia is considered to be one of the biggest risk factors? There is no definite answer but as with a lot of things that are associated with fibromyalgia, a lot of answers are there that seems to make some sense.
The relationship between fibromyalgia and carpal tunnel has one common explanation and that is the fact that your body is already very sensitive to the pain.
As you are having fibromyalgia, you will feel more pain when the pressure is applied to the median nerve which means you just need less pressure to start having a problem. Other theories are also present like some are related to poor posture and some are related to the fact that people with fibromyalgia are more likely to have injuries, as they are doing so many things to try for reducing pain.
So how can the issues from both of these syndromes get reduced? There are some other things that you can do along with the tips mentioned above. Steroid shots can also be recommended by the doctors in order to get relief from pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. This is recommended in the worst cases where pain gets overwhelmed.
Make sure to give some rest to your wrists regularly and try to take breaks during work. Prefer to wear braces on your wrists and sit on a comfortable chair and work in a good posture.
Your doctor may suggest your surgery if neither of the suggestions works for you. This is also suggested to you in the worst cases.
You don’t need to get nervous about carpal tunnel syndrome, but if you don’t take care properly, it will cause a lot of pain and stress. Just like fibromyalgia, it is an important part of treatment to take care of your symptoms. A lot of things are also there for the treatment of these disorders. You should consult your doctor for more information and ask them if you have any concerns about both of these disorders.
