Issues of Fibromyalgia and Thyroid
Take a look around you and see how far we have come in the field of science and technology. You will notice that there isn’t anything that is still a mystery if we talk about the medical field. But still, there are certain things that seem more than just mysterious. Cancer seems to be the dangerous one. Moreover, there are other medical conditions whose nature still remains unknown.
Recently, fibromyalgia is found to be a stand-alone medical illness. But before that, it was only supposed to be a form of depression. Still, there are some physicians who do not accept fibromyalgia to be a syndrome that can be taken seriously.
According to the studies, there are more than 5 million Americans who are suffering from fibromyalgia. It is a reality for them actually. Some of them have learned how to live a carefree life with pain. But unluckily, there are people who have been disabled for years. it can be more than just real for them.
Causes of fibromyalgia:
It is still a mystery and is having a question mark at the end, what actually causes fibromyalgia. Research hasn’t given actual answers to this question yet.
Fibromyalgia is thought to be a very complex disease as it has a lot of symptoms. Above all the symptoms, pain is the most distressing one and most of the times it is accompanied by various other symptoms, disorders, and diseases that develop a vicious cycle. Even doctors get confused by it. Symptoms that can come with fibromyalgia are depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, muscle pain, constipation, dizziness, muscle twitching, muscle spasms, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, headaches (sometimes very severe), eye vision, cognitive issues, abdominal pain and frequent urination. Somehow they seem to be interlinked with each other in a very odd way.

Moreover, there are other medical conditions that seem similar to fibromyalgia and that can create a serious problem when diagnosed. Among those conditions are multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
How does this trouble begin?
Nobody knows the exact root cause. Some people say the series of symptoms can be triggered by the trauma brought to the brain or spinal cord areas. Some link fibromyalgia with sleep disorder and disturbances. And some say that when it comes to pain, wrong signals are sent by the body when there is a drop in the level of serotonin in the brain. There is an important role of genetics in everything. Some studies have shown that if your parents or someone in your family has fibromyalgia and that is linked to certain genes, there will be a high risk of having fibromyalgia in you.
The relationship between fibromyalgia and thyroid diseases:
Some thyroid problems are quite common like hypothyroidism. Nearly 20 million people in the US have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. And fibromyalgia has also been diagnosed in out of all of them.
People thought that due to a vast range of a number of the symptoms that these two conditions share together, this happens. In both of these conditions, Fatigue, depression, exhaustion, brain fogginess and even muscle is encountered. Some scientists started to develop theories that say these conditions interrelate with each other.
There was also a claim that the nature of both of these conditions is autoimmune and the cause of their onset is found in the hypothalamus (the similar area of the brain). This turned out to be an initial step of the research. Dr. Teitelbaum ponders upon the fact that the way we sleep, the way our bodies feel the temperature and the functioning of the autoimmune nervous system is responsible for this region. Many of these symptoms have shown by people having fibromyalgia as well.
This school of thought says that poor thyroid hormone regulation in the patient’s body is the underlying issue of fibromyalgia. Either the undiagnosed and untreated deficiency can be the reason or the resistance that the patient’s tissues show thyroid hormones.
Several other factors also make the situation worse in addition to the symptoms caused by thyroid issues. Mechanism gets slow due to poor physical condition, nutritional deficiencies, unhealthy diet and medication. Specialists have included all these.
These are still theories and more of the research can be made in fibromyalgia niche. The syndrome is not cured, as the treatment is symptomatic. Sometimes doctors prescribe a pain medication along with other remedies like yoga, massaging, exercising etc.
Some drugs have been approved by Food and Drug Administration in the US that is found to be much effective in a lot of case. Specialists are unable to explain the working of these drugs. The working of these drugs is similar to that of antidepressants.
More adequate and better treatment should be given to the people that have fibromyalgia and thyroid issues, and this treatment should not be the same as current treatment. Hope should be there for the finding of other treatments.
