33 Surprising Symptoms Of Fibromyalgia. Some Of Them We Never Notice

Editor’s note: Any medical information included is based on a personal experience. For questions or concerns regarding health, please consult a doctor or medical professional.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness most commonly known for causing widespread pain, fatigue and brain fog. However, the disease is complex – it can cause a multitude of symptoms and is often accompanied by comorbid conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or chronic fatigue syndrome. Since fibromyalgia was formally recognized only a few decades ago, doctors are still learning about the illness and might not be able to prepare fibro patients for all the different symptoms they may experience.

To better understand the various ways in which this illness can affect people, we asked our Mighty community to share some of the physical symptoms of fibromyalgia that surprised them. Have you experienced any unexpected fibro symptoms? Let us know in the comments below.

Here’s what the community shared with us:

1. “Having a pain flare-up causes me to feel nauseous and so physically ill.”

2. “The relentless itching that pops up randomly, has no rhyme or reason, sometimes comes with hives or red spots. Itching that is insatiable and moves around from place to place.”

3. “The constant feeling of being tired. I sleep between eight and 12 hours a day and I’m still always tired.”

4. “Forgetting common words that I use every day.”

5. “[Having an] overactive bladder.”

6. “All the other medical conditions that come with it… migraine, IBS [irritable bowel syndrome], Raynauds phenomenon, chronic fatigue, insomnia and so many more. It is rarely a diagnosis on its own.”

9. “Feeling ‘loopy.’ I feel like I’m drunk. I even lose my balance while walking.”

10. “The occasional blurry vision even with glasses, like you’re seeing things through water.”

11. “The constant headaches/migraines I deal with on a daily basis.”

12. “Weird skin sensation and lack of temperature control.”

13. “Absolute klutziness. I can trip over my own feet and roll my ankles walking in grass. It is an extreme case of incoordination.”

14. “Blisters after being in the sun. Even with sunscreen use/no sunburn.”

15. “Feeling like I have bugs crawling in me to the point I will itch myself raw.”

16. “I was surprised that even my hair can hurt.”

17. “The constant sweating, even when it isn’t hot.”

18. “Breaking out into a rash for no reason.”

19. “The weakness in my hands and arms from the pain. I played the violin for six years and had incredibly strong hands, but when my fibromyalgia symptoms started my hands were the first thing affected and the strength has never returned.”

20. “Smells making me violently ill.”

21. “Surprising symptom? No clue. Most shocking thing is not even knowing what’s a fibromyalgia-related symptom anymore and what’s not. So many symptoms, so many co-existing conditions. I have no clue what’s a fibromyalgia symptom anymore.”

22. “Neurological slowness! Poor instant recall.”

23. “The way that some symptoms can take [me] out for days and then be gone, just to come back the next day.”

25. “Vaginal muscle spasms! Yep, it leaves nothing untouched! And no, it’s not pleasant!”

26. “The never being comfortable, ever. You sit down and fidget and squirm and try to get comfortable. You lay down and fidget and squirm and try to get comfortable. You try to stand up and fidget and squirm and try to get comfortable. Nothing is comfortable anymore.”

27. “Sounds. Actually being irritated by different sounds so much that [I] leave the place [I’m] at.”

28. “My skin always feeling like it’s severely sunburnt. I never thought about how much clothing could hurt. I shop now more for the feel of the fabric and its looseness on my body than how it looks.”

29. “I’m either starving no matter how much I eat or the thought of food makes me sick – there is no in between.”

30. “Tingling and weakness at the end of a busy day. It feel like [my] body is desperately trying to heal itself when it’s tired.”

31. “My hands twitch and shake. Never had it before until now. Weirdest thing ever! Doesn’t hurt, but I have lost my grip of things.”

32. “Water hurts. It’s so hard to explain that getting into a pool or lake that is cold is too painful for me. Even showering hurts.”

33. “You know what? Nothing surprises me about fibromyalgia anymore!”

i have spasms from my throat to bottom of my stomach, sometimes so violent that i can’t even speak, just grunt…i can’t even understand what i was trying to say, how could anyone else understand?

  2. TINA says:

I’ve had upper, middle and lower back pain all of my adult life. The fatigue started 10 years ago and then came what felt like 2 broken feet. Numerous blood tests and doctor visits later, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I think the stabbing pains are the worst, the fact that my feet still hurt was the most depressing.
I started using fibromyalgia herbal remedy i purchased from Best Health Herbal Centre february this year. I only used it for a month and two weeks, my condition changed automatically, all my symptoms are gone. Am now living fibromyalgia free.
All thank to Best Health Herbal Centre, i will never stop telling the world about your good work.

On the bad days I hurt from top to bottom and can’t get out of bed. My memory loss and confusion concerns me? I also have neurological problems where my insides feel like they r jumping. Its very uncomfortable.

  4. Lorraine Charles says:

The tremors are also causing my teeth to shatter like if I’m freezing and my tounge does it too. My left leg goes on a wild spasm if I sit up on the edge of the couch with my feet planted to the floor. Yes it is frustrating trying to say a word or remember what it is that you are trying to explain a simple sentence.

I have pain from my head down to my toes every day. I struggle to do every day basic things like housework shopping going to drs, hospital appointments etc I can’t get on my knees, and bending is difficult. My hands and elbows and shoulders are constantly painful, also I have osteoarthritis in my neck. My whole body is sensitive to the slightest touch especially the top right side of my leg, if slightly brushed against a light as a feather I get the sensation like an electric shock! Spasms and shooting pains come out of the blue but often. My hips and groin are especially painful at night and also my feet and shoulders. I sleep with several pillows to prop up my arm and between my knees and ankles to relieve some pressure. Constantly tossing and turning in bed to get comfortable, it doesn’t happen, I only get any sleep early hrs of morning due to exhaustion! Did I mention at least 5 trips to the bathroom during the night, and there’s no way of holding it till morning, no! I’ve suffered horrendous cramps in my legs ankles shins and feet to the point of almost passing out…usually they are in the night, literally wake me up and it’s like my body goes into shock because it’s so sudden and severe!! And the pain from the cramps I will feel for at least 2/3 days after. Muscle fatigue sets in quickly after 20/30 mins of walking my feet hurt and swell, have to make frequent stops, by now all I’m thinking of is getting home asap!!! I just had a thought! Can severe cramps in the legs cause a tendon to become inflamed and cause the condition..P.T.T.D ? As it’s a condition I have been diagnosed with this year, fibromyalgia I’ve had for 3+ years! And recently been given the, all clear for Aortic Vascalitis which I was diagnosed early 2014. Oh yes, the hot flushes and sweats are difficult to distinguish between the fibro and early menopause? And the mood swings!!! Its a living hell!! Loud noisy places in confined spaces, can’t handle that neither. Bright flashing lights, even daylight hurts sometimes. The list goes on and on…stressful situations will increase the pain tenfold!!!

  6. AC says:

I stutter when I’m overtired and the brain fog sets in.

  7. Jo Weitzel says:

I have restless leg syndrome too. It has now become severe twitching and I have been put on a medication used to control Parkinsons Disease. I also get acupuncture once a week to help with headaches, neck and shoulder pain. I doesn’t take the pain away but does relieve the severity.

  8. Orenda says:

    Has anyone tried cannabis?

  9. Cindi Wilburn says:

Yes but without a small amount of THC in it it didn’t work for me. I was in a state where it’s legal when I tried it. I would so rather take that than man made medicine !

  10. ReneecTalbert says:

I use an app called Leafly and it will tell you the best strain of medical marijuana that helps with fibromyalgia. Marijuana is the only thing I have found to relieve most of the pain and other symptoms as well.
